Some Facts

There is a lot of confusion regarding the regulations surrounding air conditioning systems and the refrigerant gas you are allowed to use. The facts are these:

• If you have an air conditioning system that's more than about 5 years old it's likely to contain refrigerant gas R22.

• The rules do NOT require you to replace an R22 Air Conditioning system, but do ban it from being maintained using new gas. Instead recycled gas must be used, which is becoming extremely expensive due to short supply.

• By the end of 2014, systems with R22 will become "unserviceable", because even recycled R22 air conditioning refrigerant gas will be banned.

• You have a legal obligation to have systems containing more than 3kg of R22 checked annually (by a qualified refrigeration engineer) for leaks. Most commercial AC systems contain more than 3 kg of R22.

• Systems over 5 years old are far less efficient than modern systems using different gases.

• The Carbon Trust encourage qualifying businesses to replace inefficient systems with modern ones, by offering interest free loans with repayments that are no higher than the savings you’ll make on your energy bill.

Benefits of replacing your existing system

This all means that keeping your existing R22 based system will become more and more expensive as time goes on, in energy costs, inspection fees, and gas for servicing, and that by 2014 it will not be serviceable at all.
